A couple are coming to terms with the loss of a diamond ring that was a family heirloom and was worth thousands of dollars.
Matt Cawley popped the questioned to his other half Stacey Scanlon during a romantic walk along Lighthouse Jetty in South Yarmouth recently, WBZ reports.
Commenting on his feelings as the events unfolded concerning the item of jewellery, the groom-to-be said: “Just another chapter in the book. I was like ‘Here we go!’
“I felt like it’s a story that’ll be passed along in our families forever.”
He had tied the diamond ring to a sand dollar and slipped it onto a rock when his girlfriend was not looking.
However, the romantic gesture went terribly wrong after he called her attention to the object.
Ms Scanlon grabbed the sand dollar – which is a form of flattened sea urchin – but the jewellery that had been secured to it tumbled through the nooks of the jetty they were on and disappeared.
“You could just hear it go – click, click, click – down through the rocks,” said Mr Cawley, adding: “I knew it was gone.”
Meanwhile, his soon-to-be bride added: “It was just a freak accident. I don’t understand why it happened to us. It’s one of those things ‘Why us?’”
Despite their efforts to call beachgoers, lifeguards and a man with a metal detector, their attempts to recover the item of jewellery have been fruitless.
However, Mr Cawley still succeeded in asking the big question and, despite the calamity that had occurred, his significant other said yes.
The couple’s relatives were waiting back at their house to throw an engagement party, which may have taken their minds off the loss for a while.
Handing over engagement rings is a long-standing tradition that shows no signs of dying out. In fact, even men are now donning such items in a bid to represent their love for their fiancés.
